At We Change Lives, we believe everyone should feel proud of the space they call home – because in social care, a room is never “just a room”. It’s a safe place, a reflection of someone’s personality, and a space that supports dignity, choice, and wellbeing.
During Home Environment Week, we took a closer look at what makes a space feel truly personal and why it matters so much for the people we support. As a team, we explored how important it is to make each room feel personal and homely, while remembering that – although this is where we work – it’s first and foremost the place where the people we support live. Respecting and nurturing that makes all the difference.
From our team discussions (and plenty of ideas on the whiteboard!):
We talked about how a supportive home environment can improve: | On the other hand, we recognised that a poor home environment can lead to: |
Healthy outcomes | Risks and falls |
Independence | Isolation & neglect |
Emotional wellbeing | Illness |
Safety & quality of care | Poor mental health |
It’s why we take so much care in making each person’s space theirs – with respect for the fact that, while this is our workplace, it’s our residents’ home.
Kevin’s Transformation
You might remember our recent trip to IKEA with Kevin (mood boards in hand) where he took the lead: picked out furniture, measured every detail, and carefully chose the colours and accessories that would make his room feel like his. Watching his creativity shine was a joy for us all.
And now… the transformation is complete! Kevin’s room is freshly painted, furnished, decorated, and full of personality. We couldn’t be happier with how it’s turned out – and we know Kevin feels the same.

A Special Bonus – Peter’s Transformation Too!
As a little extra treat, we’re also sharing Peter’s room transformation. Peter started with his own mood board, then worked with the team to choose furniture and décor that felt right for him. The result? A room that reflects his style, personality, and needs perfectly.
